Artshow at Coral Street Arts House

ELEVATED

East vs. West on the Blue Line

Positive Space, of Fishtown, and the Dead Artist’s Guild of West Philly, will present a group show of prints, photographs, and paintings reflecting on the presence and influence of SEPTA’s Blue Line, at the Coral Street Arts House from June 4th - 30th.

ElevatedThe show is intended to act as an arena of friendly competition between the artists of West Philly and those from the Fishtown/Kensington area. “We may have differences, but we still have the El in common”, says Vick Aita, a member of Positive Space and competitor for Fishtown in the upcoming show. “We’re going to kick West Philly’s ass”, he adds. Also representing Fishtown will be Brendan Finney, Michael McJilton, Simon Grigsby, Jacob Hellman, and Nathan. Artists from West Philly include Abbie Miller, Mandy Katz, Beth Pulse, Christopher Hartshorne, and Suzanne Francis. Ms. Francis, a longtime resident of West Philly and ambassador to Fishtown, explains “I’m here to represent my people, but I’m also here to form connections with other people with similar interests who also happen to live on the other side of the world.”

A Reception will be held on June 6th, from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm, in conjunction with the First Fridays in Fishtown, at the Coral Street Arts House. A dance off with the band Northern Liberties will be featured as well as beer from Philadelphia Brewing Company. The Coral Street Arts House is located at 2446-68 Coral St. (corner of Coral St. and Hagert St.). The Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 9-5 by appointment; call (215) 739-0310 for arrangements.

Sponsored by Positive Space and the Dead Artist’s Guild, both of which have been creating opportunities for artists on a grassroots level in Philadelphia for over 6 years.

Mark Mothersbaugh’s Postcard Diaries
The visual art of Mark Mothersbaugh
founding member of music group DEVO.

These images began as postcards; personal assemblages and drawn images conjured and rendered between shows and soundchecks, often sent to friends and family while Mothersbaugh was on the road with DEVO. They were initially collected and displayed in solo presentations in the 80’s and 90’s, followed by the more recent and widely acclaimed exhibitions in 2003 Homefront Invasion! and the Visual Art of Mark Mothersbaugh tours which began in 2005.
